How to Handle Tuscaloosa Humidity Without Wrecking Your Skin

Summer here is its own skin type. Here's how to lighten your routine without letting your skin dry out underneath.

By Maddie Ellis, Lead Esthetician · June 18, 2026 · 5 min read

If you have spent a July in Tuscaloosa, you know the feeling: you wash your face, walk to your car, and by the time you get there your skin is shiny again. Humidity does not mean your skin is hydrated. It usually means your skin is oily on the surface and thirsty underneath.

Go lighter, not emptier

The instinct in summer is to strip everything back. Skipping moisturizer entirely tends to backfire — skin reads the dryness and makes more oil. Swap your heavy winter cream for a gel or lotion and keep the step.

A lightweight hyaluronic serum under that gel does more for summer skin than any mattifying powder.

SPF is the whole ballgame

Alabama UV index regularly climbs past 9 between May and August. That is high enough to undo months of brightening work in a couple of unprotected afternoons. Reapply at lunch, especially if you are outside for tailgates or the river.

What we'd book in summer

HydraFacial once a month keeps congestion from stacking up, and LED helps if humidity is bringing breakouts along the jawline. Save the stronger peels for fall when UV drops.
